Q: Do you see Couples?

Q: What happens during the first session?

Q: What happens during the first session?

No, I do not provide marriage or family therapy.  I work with individuals who are 18 and older.  However, there may come a time in your work that you would benefit from bringing in a loved one and that is OK!

Q: What happens during the first session?

Q: What happens during the first session?

Q: What happens during the first session?

A: The initial session is the time for you to start to share your story, talk about your goals and what you would like to change. Another important aspect of the first session is deciding if we are a good fit. Do I seem like someone you can trust? We are establishing a relationship that will become the foundation for working together. Whether you're joining online or in person therapy sessions; this is where we collaborate your needs

Q: How long do appointments last?

Q: What happens during the first session?

Q: What can I expect from therapy?

A: Our first initial appointment is our “intake assessment” which is 60 minutes. After this, appointments are 55 minutes. This is the standard length of a counseling session; primarily for insurances purposes.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

Q: What can I expect from therapy?

A: Once you have made a decision to see a therapist, you still might be apprehensive about the process. Many people feel nervous before their first appointment. Therapy is a shared journey; a shared process.  You can expect to be respected. You can expect that I will offer opinions and suggestions from time to time but I will not tell you what to do.

Q: How often will we meet?

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

A:   Therapy often works best with weekly or bi-weekly meetings to foster trust and increase results through consistency and dedication to the work.  Once some or all of your goals are met, meeting less often.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

A: I ask for 24 hours notice of cancellation or you will need to pay a cancellation fee of $75 for late cancels or no shows. In case of emergencies, I do offer a one time freebie. It’s important that we meet consistently in order to make progress; especially engaging in EMDR therapy.

What makes change possible?

Q: Do you prescribe medication?

Q: Do you prescribe medication?

I believe in the combination of readiness and willingness. First, a person must be in a place in their lives where they are ready for therapy.  Willingness to embrace the learning process. If these things are in place, and if the person is with a therapist whom they feel can provide the right amount of guidance and support, then change is very possible.

Q: Do you prescribe medication?

Q: Do you prescribe medication?

Q: Do you prescribe medication?

A: No, I am not a medical doctor. Many patients find medication can be helpful, but many of them also progress well in therapy without medication. If you want to be evaluated for psychiatric medication, either contact your primary care physician or a psychiatrist. If you are already taking medication, I am happy to coordinate care with your doctor.

What States do you see clients?

What States do you see clients?

I see individuals in person and virtually in Colorado.

Starting in January 2024, I am providing telehealth (online therapy sessions) to individuals in Illinois as that's my "home state".  EMDR therapy can also be administered online outside of in person.

Modalities often used in my practice:

EMDR

EMDR

EMDR is a structured therapy that allows you to provide a history of the event without having to go into detail.

With EMDR sometimes our experiences get stored in memories that keep us stuck in the present day. Our nervous system has over adapted based on these experiences in the past. The old experience gets triggered and then we may have symptoms of anxiety, depression, nightmares, flashbacks, hypervigilance.

With the modality of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy we can expand psychological flexibility. Psychological flexibility encompasses emotional openness and the ability to adapt your thoughts and behaviors to better align with your values and goals.  It aims to help you move forward through difficult emotions so you can put your energy into healing instead of dwelling on the negative.

DBT

DBT teaches people to accept their thoughts, feelings and behaviors, and the techniques to change them. Not only are personal skills taught in DBT, but skills for interpersonal relationships are also emphasized. DBT is based on CBT, but it focuses more on the emotional and social aspects of living.  DBT utilizes mindfulness skills to how to live present and in the moment.  Mindfulness skills help you slow down and focus on using healthy coping skills when you are in the midst of emotional pain. The strategy can also help you stay calm and avoid engaging in automatic negative thought patterns and impulsive behavior. EMDR therapy has been proven to also be able to integrate all of these concepts.  Whether you are utilizing online therapy sessions or in person we will tailor a plan to what will be most effective for you.

Parts Work

There are likely times you've been able to notice " There is a part of me that wants _____ and a part of me that doesn't want_____".  This modality allows us to explore your internal world getting curious to these aspects of self and how to support, offer compassion and get curious to each of these parts.   Ego State or Parts Work can support significant personal transformation by helping individuals recognize when they are being triggered, strengthening understanding of what the state being triggered needed "back then" and what it needs to know now and bringing far more of the helpful aspects of the various ego states. This can often be a part of deeper work utilized in preparation for EMDR therapy.
